Oman supports nuclear weapon free zone in ME
The Sultanate has underscored the significance of activities and programmes undertaken by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to utilise atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Oman pointed out that this approach contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGS).
This was stated in the Sultanate’s speech before the 65th round of IAEA General Assembly held here. The speech was delivered by Yousuf bin Ahmed al Jabri, the Sultanate’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna.
The Sultanate affirmed its stance on making the Middle East Region free of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear arms. “This can be achieved only through the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the application of the IAEA’S comprehensive safeguards,” said Al Jabri.
Al Jabri added that the Sultanate also reiterated its support for the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. He stressed that the region must also be free of other mass destruction weapons.
