FAO Oman marks World Food Day
FAO Oman in collaboration with MAFWR and other partner organisations is launching a series of events to celebrate WFD2021
This year’s #Worldfoodday is celebrated for the second time during the Covid-19 pandemic, which repercussions triggered an unprecedented global economic recession. This has resulted in a dramatic loss of livelihoods and incomes and increased food insecurity and inequality. It has disrupted agri-food systems. In that context, this year’s theme, Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life, known as the four betters, will raise awareness of the need for supporting the transformation to more efficient and sustainable agrifood systems. Furthermore, it calls for action across sectors to ensure that our agri-food systems deliver enough affordable, nutritious and safe food for all.
Nora Ourabah Haddad, FAO Representative to the Sultanate of Oman says, “Agri-food systems lie at the heart of sustainable development. A sustainable food system is one that delivers food for all in such a way that the economic, social and environmental bases to generate food and nutrition security for future the generations is not compromised.’’
She also added ‘’ We can all participate in the transformation of agri-food systems by shifting from old consumption patterns to diets that promote all dimensions of individuals’ health and wellbeing, have low environmental pressure and impact and are accessible, affordable, safe and equitable. ’’
The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MOAFWR), has emphasised the importance of working together to transform the way the world produces, consumes and thinks about food. A series of national dialogues organised in preparation to UN Food Systems summit, came up with the development of a technical road map outlining its approach to food systems transformation.
Furthermore, the Sultanate stated its commitment to bold new actions, solutions and strategies, and to an action plan which will deliver progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) by the year 2030, each of which relies on healthier, more sustainable and more equitable food systems.
To commemorate this year’s World Food Day, FAO Oman in collaboration with MOAFWR and other partner organisations from both the public and private sector as well academia is launching a series of events to celebrate WFD2021 and raise awareness about food systems for a better production, better environment, better nutrition and better life.
