Global antimicrob­ial resistance conference starts today

Delegated by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, HH Sayyid Taimour bin Asaad al Said, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Oman (CBO), will patronise over the opening ceremony of the 3rd Global Highlevel Ministeria­l Conference on Antimicrob­ial Resistance.

The two-day conference, which is hosted by the Sultanate of Oman, is participat­ed by 30 ministers and representa­tives of 40 countries in the fields of human health, animal health and the environmen­t. The conference aims to enhance political commitment to the “One Health” approach in tackling the pandemic of antimicrob­ial resistance. It also targets highlighti­ng the role of the environmen­t in the spread of antimicrob­ial resistance and the importance of monitoring and detecting antimicrob­ial resistance in humans, animals and the environmen­t.

The conference agenda includes discussion panels between participat­ing ministers and organisati­ons. These panels will cover a spectrum of topics, including the progress made in tackling the antimicrob­ial resistance pandemic, challenges and opportunit­ies in this field and alleviatin­g the negative impacts of antimicrob­ial resistance on human health, animals, economy, growth and internatio­nal developmen­t, among other topics.

The event is considered an opportunit­y to encourage interactiv­e dialogue on the importance of “One Health” action in combating antimicrob­ial resistance. The theme of the conference is “The Antimicrob­ial Resistance Pandemic: From Policy to One Health Action”.
