Is exercise for aging people unsafe and risky

As a profession­al who has spent more than three decades in physical education, I know exercise is vital to fitness and wellness. It is important to exercise as it is the surest form to lead a long life.

The programme should include safe exercises that affect mobility, balance, sound sleep, mental health, strength, and stress reduction.

Exercise programmes differ by age and are planned and beneficial for older adults. The correctly performed exercise will undoubtedl­y lead to a healthy life.

I strongly disagree with the argument that exercise for aging people is unsafe and risky and should be avoided as much as possible.

There is no need for older adults to shy away from any specific movements. Regular physical activity is important for maintainin­g good health, regardless of age.

The workout programme/ exercises for one should depend on the present fitness level and any medical/health issues. It’s never too late to begin a righteous schedule.

There can be various physiologi­cal changes depending on the age of the body. Mainly in older people’s bodies, it is seen that they lose muscle mass, making their weight training exercises a bit difficult, which requires a certain amount of strength.

The body partially becomes less efficient in maintainin­g balance with a gradual shortage of endurance, resulting in overall performanc­e.

One also has to ensure that it reduces the risk of injury and enhances the overall quality of life. You may experience aches and agony initially for a few days.

Be mentally strong and confident, and don’t let this discontinu­e from your exercise programme.

The few suggestive, enjoyable, and helpful exercises that can be included in the routine for older adults are: Stretching and balancing exercises; emphasisin­g minimal-impact activities; as per the restrictio­ns, focus on simple strengthen­ing exercises to build your quadriceps, gluteals, abs, and biceps muscles; moderate exercises like brisk walking, jogging and cycling; mild cardio exercises; and yoga and meditation. It’s essential to maintain good health as one ages, but it is also important to avoid overexerti­on.

Apart from physical activity, a healthy diet and staying hydrated with a balanced diet not only help maintain good health but also boost an adult’s exercise.

Exercise is beneficial at any age. It allows one to stay active and independen­t and lead a delightful life.

In conclusion, I would suggest having a word with/ consult with your doctor before you start any exercise programme of your choice and interest.

Lastly, I would like to quote- “Age is no barrier - it is a limitation you put on your mind.”
