THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE

Muscat will be welcoming a fantastic lineup of family shows beginning immediately after Eid. There are no less than three shows designed to appeal to young and family audiences scheduled to take place in April and early May.

First up is the acrobatic version of Swan Lake, presenting the historic classical ballet to Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music with a cultural twist or two. Performed by the Xi’an Acrobatic Troupe of China, this is a spectacular take on the original, with stunning choreography, costumes, and staging resulting in a sweet shop of delights. This 20th anniversary production follows an award-winning 2008 World Tour and promises to be more spectacular than ever, integrating more than 100 unique skills to capture the imagination and challenge limits.

April closes with another extraordinary event, Stomp! the world-famous theatrical percussion show, which has attracted thousands of people for more than 30 years with nearly 12,000 performances. Be prepared to feel the beat like never before. Stomp began life at the edgy Edinburgh Fringe festival in the UK, where street performances inspired the use of street objects, bins, garage doors, road brushes. The beats, the vibe, the dance, the choreography, and staging offer a window onto a vibrant world of musical theatre. This is an award-winning show, the recipient of an Olivier Award for Best Choreography (London’s Tony Award), a New York Obie Award, a Drama Desk

Award for Unique Theatre Experience and a Special Citation from Best Plays.

As we enter the final month of shows, May kicks off with the Canadian aerial acrobatic troupe, Cirque Eloise, and their stunning show Cirkopolis, tapping into the theme of art being present in all walks of life. Set against the backdrop of a corporate skyline full of high-rise buildings, amongst grey suited, grey faced office workers, there emerges a magical narrative of joy and dynamic energy. With dance, song, and incredible acrobatics, the world of work is transformed into a playground, reminding us of the pure pleasure of childhood games.

The opera house brings to Oman the opportunity to travel the world through music, offering a diverse range of shows that will inspire and enthral every generation. In April and May alone, the venue welcomes companies from China, the UK, Italy, Egypt, and Canada. The opera house season continues through May with three further shows. Look out for a celebration of Puccini’s 100th anniversary with the opera La Bohème; honour the legend Maria Callas with two superstars of the opera scene, Leo Nucci and Sonya Yoncheva; and close the season with a spectacular show from Cario Opera House created to explore the classical story of Scheherazade.

Abalone, known as one of the world’s most expensive seafood, is prized for its rich and flavourful meat. Omani Abalone, known for its unique taste and texture is a celebrated delicacy because of its softer texture and distinctive golden hue making it very different from its Australian or South African counterparts.

Locally known as As’sufailah, the Omani abalone has sustained traditional fishing communities, finding its way to markets in Yemen, India, and more recently, China.

For centuries, Omani fishermen and women have skillfully harvested abalone along the Dhofar coast. Using traditional wetsuits and without breathing apparatus, they expertly dive into shallow waters, scouring the seabed for these prized gastropods clinging to rocks.

Decades of intense fishing and unsustainable practices have led to a decline in wild abalone stocks. Recognising the need for conservation and sustainable utilisation, Oman Aquaculture Company LLC (OAC) was established in 2012 through a joint venture partnership between Muscat Overseas Group and Abagold Limited of South Africa. OAC aims to tap into Oman’s marine resources by implementing land-based commercial aquaculture operations specifically for cultivating Omani Abalone.

The venture aligns with Oman’s natural advantages — its warm coastal waters and subtropical climate provide an ideal environment for abalone aquaculture. The OAC endeavours to not only meet local demand but also to contribute to international markets. With projects like the Mirbat farm, set to produce the prized ‘Golden Abalone,’ and similar ventures in the pipeline, Oman is poised to bolster its abalone industry sustainably.

This initiative not only promises economic growth but also embodies a commitment to responsible aquaculture practices, ensuring the preservation of Oman’s marine heritage for future generations. Through strategic partnerships and innovative approaches, Oman is carving a path towards a thriving and sustainable aquaculture industry, safeguarding its marine resources while meeting the demands of global markets.

THE RISE OF COMMERCIAL ABALONE FARMING

With the escalating demand for abalone, notably in Far East markets, both international and local investors have delved into the prospect of commercial abalone farming. Facilitating these endeavours, the Implementation Support & Follow-up Unit (ISFU) of the Diwan of Royal Court—a distinguished committee—is committed to streamlining the approval and permitting processes for investments. ISFU focuses on expediting projects and initiatives geared towards propelling Oman’s economic diversification efforts.

OAC reported that the “first of two abalone farming projects initiated last year in the Governorate is due to produce its maiden harvest this year. Oman Aquaculture Company, set up by Al Jazeera Investments at a cost of around RO 5.7 million, will celebrate this year the harvest of its first crop of ‘Golden Abalone’ (Haliotis Mariae) from its newly established farm in Mirbat.”

“The Mirbat project represents a successful effort to commercially produce Golden Abalone, a high-value locally occurring species that is billed as one of the highest quality and most valuable species of abalone in the world. Together with a similar venture under development at Sharbathat (Wilayat of Shaleem and Al Halaniyat Islands), the projects are aimed at sustaining the farming of Omani abalone for local consumption and export as well,” OAC reported

With the full assistance of ISFU, the abalone commercial farms are projected to produce around 450 tonnes of farmed abalone per year at their full capacity.

A LUXURIOUS ABALONE EXPERIENCE IN MIRBAT

To support the initiatives of Oman Aquaculture Company, luxury resort Alila Hinu Bay located on the beautiful shores of Mirbat is introducing a menu that celebrates the rich flavours and cultural heritage of Oman’s coastal treasures. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the region as Alila Hinu Bay becomes the very first hotel to embrace the eco-conscious practices of Abalone across the Sultanate of Oman and the Middle East.

As the property is committed to responsible aquaculture and preserving marine biodiversity, as well as supporting the local community, the resort’s award-winning restaurant, Seasalt will display a dedicated Abalone section on the menu, curated by Head Chef Prakash Sundaram.

Signature dishes include Abalone Sashimi, Steamed Abalone, Abalone Gratin with brown butter, garlic, and herbs, and Abalone Green Curry, prepared with Moringa Leaves, Mushroom, and Coconut.

By investing in Abalone farming, the resort aims to increase the value of this species while also providing employment opportunities to Omanis. It further aims * to boost the tourism sector by placing the spotlight on the sustainable farming process and contributing to the economic growth of the region.

“We believe in supporting local communities and preserving the environment. That’s why we’ve partnered with Oman Aquaculture to bring you the freshest and most responsibly sourced abalone dishes. By collaborating with Oman Aquaculture, we not only ensure the sustainability of this precious marine resource but also contribute to the conservation efforts of Oman’s coastal ecosystems,” shared Juan Paolo Alfonso, the general manager of Alila Hinu Bay.

Alila Hinu Bay and Oman Aquaculture are dedicated to ensuring that each Abalone product undergoes a meticulous 2–3-year process, from settlement and nursery to grow-out and market delivery. Through expertise and dedication, with the guarantee that Abalone reaches international markets in optimum condition.
