GFOW kicks off Social Protection Law Programme
MUSCAT:
The General Federation of Oman Workers, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and the Oman Chamber of Commerce, commenced the initial phase of its on-site programme aimed at familiarising individuals with the Social Protection Law and Labour Law provisions in the Muscat governorate. The programme was inaugurated by Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas.
The initiative, spanning multiple days, seeks to bolster awareness regarding these legal frameworks, reinforce work ethics and negotiation values, and identify challenges encountered by labourers in adhering to the regulations. Additionally, it aims to spotlight exemplary practices enhancing compliance with these laws, while providing workers with practical tools and skills to navigate evolving labour market dynamics.
Chairman of the General Federation of Oman Workers, Nabhan bin Ahmed al Batashi highlighted the programme’s role in clarifying recent amendments to labour laws, particularly concerning occupational health, injury compensation, and sick leave administered through the Social Protection Fund.
He also noted ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of Labour, the Federation, and the Chamber of
Commerce to finalise regulatory updates for approval by the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs.
The programme encompasses several key areas, including social insurance under the Social Protection Fund, wage regulations, legal frameworks for economic terminations, and essential provisions concerning Omani employment, contracts, working hours, vacations, safety protocols, peaceful strike regulations, penalties, and dispute resolution mechanisms.
This initiative operates through four stations. The inaugural station in Muscat targets workers’ unions and human resources representatives from various private sector companies in Muscat, Al Batinah South and Al Sharqiyah South governorates. Subsequent stations focus on additional governorates and sectors, with the goal of ensuring comprehensive coverage and engagement.
