Daredevils manage second victory

-

RAIPUR: Umesh Yadav brought smiles on Delhi Daredevils as he bowled a miserly and successful 18th over and carved out this season’s second win for his team yesterday. Delhi defeated Pune Warriors by 15 runs as the SVNS International Stadium, here made its debut yesterday.

Pune Warriors India put up a strong resistance against the Daredevils, with openers Robin Uthappa (37) and Aaron Finch (37) putting up a 76-run partnership for the first wicket. Both the openers found it easy to keep pace with the run chase.

However, Irfan Pathan gave Delhi Daredevils crucial breakthroughs when he dismissed both Uthappa and Finch.

Pathan struck in his third over and took out Uthappa (37) first and Finch (37) three balls later. While Uthappa was out due to a brilliant catch by Unmukt Chand at the long leg region, Finch would consider himself unlucky after he was caught behind by the wicket-keeper off a delivery which came off his DELHI DAREDEVILS M Jayawardena c L. Yuvraj Singh and Luke Wright managed to keep the Warriors’ run chase on track after the quick dismissals of the openers.

While Wright scored 19 runs with three 4s, Yuvraj hit 31 runs in 24 balls with four 4s. Umesh Yadav, however, dashed all Pune’s hope when he scalped Wright and Yuvraj’s wickets in the 18th over, with Abhishek Nayar 2-0-15-1 PUNE WARRIORS R Uthappa c U. Chand b I. Pathan 37 A Finch c K. Pune Warriors chose to field on a pitch their captain Aaron Finch believed would help his seamers early on.

Earlier, boosted by David Warner’s unbeaten 52 off 25 balls, Delhi Daredevils managed a total of 164 for 5 against Pune Warriors India.

Put into bat, Mahela Jaywarde- na fell early to Ashok Dinda and Pune had the early wicket they wanted. Sehwag looked in good knick as he started to open out in the powerplay and it seemed that a big score was there for the taking. But Dinda struck again and snared him with a ball that was not quick as Sehwag expected.

Delhi were in further trouble after Unmukt Chand fell to Rahul Sharma. Robin Uthappa took a good catch behind the stumps to send the youngster back.

Things went from bad to worse when Ben Rohrer was dismissed by Abhishek Nayar. David Warner knew he had to play the role of the attacking batsman with Delhi at 111 for 4 in 16 overs. Warner began to give himself room in the last overs and took a toll on the Pune bowling attack. Kedhar Jadhav also chipped in with 25 from 19 balls that included the odd big hit towards the latter stages.

The last four overs saw 53 runs given away by the Pune bowlers and 164 is a total that shall challenge their batting line-up.
