SQU, Ningxia ink pact to boost ties

Both sides discussed about building a Confucius Institute in the region. Confucius Institutes are non-profit public institutio­ns


Times News Service MUSCAT: Top officials from the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and the Ningxia Medical University, Yinchuan, People’s Republic of China, discussed means to strengthen cooperatio­n between the two institutio­ns.

The discussion was held in connection with the visit of a delegation from Ningxia Medical University to SQU. The delegation, headed by Ma Jijun, Vice Presi- dent of Ningxia Medical University, was received by Dr Hamed bin Suleiman Al Salmi, SQU Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administra­tive & Financial Affairs, and Salahddin Al Saadi, Acting Director of Internatio­nal Cooperatio­n Office, and other officials.

In 2013, a letter of intent was signed between the two universiti­es. This is the third visit of Ningxia University to SQU. In the meeting, both sides discussed about building a Confucius In- stitute in the region. Confucius Institutes are non-profit public institutio­ns affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and are aimed at promoting the Chinese language and culture, support local Chinese teaching internatio­nally, and facilitate cultural exchanges. The two sides also discussed ways to enhance cooperatio­n between the two universiti­es through student exchange programmes, exchange of physicians, cooperatio­n in medical fields, and joint research.

After the meeting with the Deputy Vice Chancellor, the Chinese delegation visited the College of Medicine & Health Sciences and held discussion with the Assistant Deans and other officials. They also visited the SQU Hospital and reviewed the means to enhance partnershi­p.
