Sultanate’s population reaches 4.2m

MUSCAT: Oman’s population reached 4.18 million by May end, growing at 0.2 per cent, latest data from National Centre for Statistics and Informatio­n (NCSI) shows.

“While the number of Omani citizens is 2,338,769, the number of registered expatriate­s is 1,847,145. The statistics also indicate that there are 135,513 expatriate­s whose place of residence is not recorded, a one per cent decrease compared to the figures recorded last April,” the data reveals. The data also show that the majority of population resides in Muscat Governorat­e, where the number of residents rose by 0.4 per cent compared to the figures recorded last April, reaching 1,288,330.

The figures also show that Muscat remains the only governorat­e where the number of expatriate residents surpasses the number of Omani residents.

The number of expatriate­s residing in Muscat reached 802,000 compared to 486,306 Omanis.

Al Batinah North Governorat­e came second on the list with 681,333 residents logging a growth rate of 0.2 per cent, compared to the figures recorded last April.

The number of Omani residents in the governorat­e reached 461,859, compared to 219, 474 expatriate­s.

Al Buraimi, Dakhiliyah, Sharqiyah South, Sharqiyah North and Dhahirah Governorat­es also recorded a growth rate of 0.2 per cent.

The population of Al Buraimi reached 102,911 persons. The figures of the Omani and expatriate population­s were approximat­ely equal as Omani residents number 51,407, while the expatriate residents’ number reached 51,504.

The population of Dakhiliyah Governorat­e reached 416,332 including 321,511 Omanis, in addition to 94, 821 expatriate­s.

In Al Sharqiyah South Governorat­e, the total population was 275,524 including 187,935 Omanis, in addition to 87,589 expatriate­s. Similarly, in Al Sharqiyah North Governorat­e, the population reached 249,716 persons including 162,644 Omanis and 87,072 expatriate­s.
