Empty Quarter Desert expedition to begin on December 10
LONDON: With the blessings of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said , the inauguration of “Crossing the Empty Quarter Desert“expedition by British Mark Evans, accompanied by Mohammed Al Zadjali and A’mir Al Wahaibi, was announced at the headquarters of the Omani-British Society in London.
The expedition will begin from Salalah in the Governorate of Dhofar to Qatari capital Doha, for a distance of up to 1,300 kilometers, and will take two months.
The historical expedition will begin under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture, and Prince Charles of Britain, within the framework of celebration of the Sultanate’s 45th Glorious National Day, and the 85th anniversary of the first recorded crossing in the history of the Empty Quarter Desert in 1930 by the British explorer Bertram Thomas. The expedition aims to revive the spirit of traditional friendship between Oman and Britain.
A seminar was also held on the history of the expedition, its track and goals. At the beginning of his speech, Mark Evans thanked the Royal Cavalry for its contribution in the selection of six camels that have the ability to travel such arduous expedition, which begins from Salalah on December 10. He said the choice of camels was not an easy process and their preparation for the expedition requires special attention.
