Political leaders must realise basic needs of people

This refers to the article, Pakistan must invest a lot more in education (November 3). I do agree that as far as Pakistan is concerned, investing in education was not the key focus in the recent past due to a number of reasons. The continuing unrest in the country has been seriously affecting the growth of the younger generation in particular, whereas the funds have been diverted to other areas. To begin with, political leaders must realise the basic needs of the people and closely connect with the society to build upon their trust and confidence, as only a collective effort can bring change to the overall perceptions, and resolve issues that concern the mainstream community. The key focus is to improve the basics of existence, which has been constantly ignored in several South Asian countries over the last two decades. Besides education, poverty and health-related issues have also not been given the required attention. Instead, the focus has been defence and security sectors. Education being a priority for the youth to come forward to work towards refining the society from all elements of conflicts and disparities, it requires serious attention and allocation of funds. However, unfortunately, there has been hardly any policy change. — Ramachandran Nair, Ruwi Scan this QR code to send letters to the Readers’ Forum, containing not more than 200 words with full name, address and telephone number, may be sent by mail (Times of Oman, P.O.
