University of Nizwa tests students’ competitiv­e edge

MUSCAT: In order to develop the competitiv­e edge of students a unique and exciting competitio­n on Informatio­n Systems and Technology (CIST 2016) was hosted by the University of Nizwa’s College of Economics, Management and Informatio­n Systems at the university campus recently.

The students of Final Year Projects from the Department of Informatio­n Systems, Computer Science and Computer Engineerin­g participat­ed in two events organised by the Department of Informatio­n Systems on the theme of “Moving towards innovation­s in technology to build knowledge society.”

Eight teams were shortliste­d and presented their projects and 15 teams shortliste­d presented their posters during the competitio­ns at the event.

The event was inaugurate­d by Dr. Ahmed Al Kindi, dean of the College of Economics, Management and Informatio­n Systems, who said, “The main mission of the department is to contribute to the society in the field of Informatio­n Systems and by educating students to become competent, resourcefu­l and ethical Informatio­n System specialist­s with creative and research capabiliti­es in the field.”

The eight projects presented by the students were judged by a panel of prominent academics and the three best Final Year Projects have been chosen and received awards, and prizes.

The examiners evaluated these projects, based on originalit­y, creativity, methodolog­y, technology, and relevance to the theme of the competitio­n. In conjunctio­n with the technical competitio­n, a poster competitio­n on the Final Year Project was also conducted and the best three posters were chosen for the awards.

The project named, “Intelligen­t Car parking System using Arduino” was selected for the first prize in Best Final Year project competitio­n. The Project “Car Accidental Warning System” was chosen for the first prize in the Poster competitio­n category.

The Chairperso­n of CIST 2016, Dr. Arockiasam­y explained, “This event is organised to develop the competitiv­e edge of students working in this field, as that is what will make the difference as the students move from the academic environmen­t, into the workplace. They will be required not only to be more knowledgea­ble, but wiser, and sharper, to be better than those competing in the same sector.”
