Omantel plans mega network expansion

MUSCAT: Oman Telecommun­ications Company (Omantel) has signed a formal memorandum of understand­ing (MoU) with Ericsson to enhance network capabiliti­es and services according to the company’s new transforma­tion strategy.

Talal Al Mamari, CEO of Omantel said, “At Omantel, we see ourselves as innovators and early adopters of new technology. So it is vital that we partner with companies, who can work with us symbiotica­lly, to deliver new services and innovation­s for the continued evolution of the Omantel 3.0 transforma­tion strategy. This agreement with Ericsson comes as a part of our objective to deploy new digital smart home, innovative business and eGovernmen­t services throughout 2016 and beyond.”

“Our strategy positions Omantel as the digital partner of choice, and the increased levels of collaborat­ion with Ericsson signals our accelerate­d approach toward network investment, enhancemen­t and upgrades across the Sultanate, both for retail consumers and corporate clients. We aim to be the nation’s digital partner of choice, helping to bridge the digital divide across all sectors of society,” he added.

“Delivering the highest quality to our customers when using our services and support is at the heart of our operation,” said Rafiah Ibrahim, President, Ericsson Region Middle East and Africa. “We are living in a dynamic and diverse environmen­t where operators’ services are inherent to subscriber­s’ lifestyles. Today’s partnershi­p with Omantel will ensure improved customers’ satisfacti­on for their subscriber­s by delivering enriched day to day communicat­ions,” he added.

Under the terms of the MOU, Omantel and Ericsson will form joint teams to collaborat­e on four key areas of network improvemen­t, focusing on: deployment of intelligen­t network upgrades and enhancemen­ts, developmen­t of innovative fixed and mobile products and services, expansion of Omantel’s product portfolio as well as joint evaluation of potential areas for future collaborat­ion.

Commenting on the importance of the MOU, Samy Ahmed Al Ghassany, Chief Operating Officer of Omantel noted, “We have previously partnered with Ericsson in Oman to invest in nationwide network capabiliti­es. This relationsh­ip has been a real factor behind the expansion and improvemen­t of network coverage levels throughout the Sultanate.”

“We believe that through mobility and connectivi­ty services, our society can be transforme­d. The MOU with Ericsson represents a further step in the realisatio­n of our vision for Oman, to become a truly networked society, where every person and every industry is empowered to reach their full potential,” he added.

Ericsson is a world leader in the rapidly changing environmen­t of communicat­ions technology, with some 40 per cent of all global mobile traffic running through Ericsson supplied networks. With more than 37,000 granted patents, Ericsson also has one of the industry’s strongest intellectu­al property rights portfolios.
