Fatma wins doubles crown in Spain

In the summit clash, Fatma and her Spanish partner Arabela staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Argentina’s Victoria Bosio and Japan’s Kana Daniel 2-6, 7-5 (10-5)

MUSCAT: This time there was no stopping Omani star Fatma Al Nabhani and her partner Arabela Fernandez Rabener.

The Omani-Spanish duo who had to settle for doubles second place in the first of two $15,000 ITF Pro Circuit Las Palmos de Gran Canaria tournament in Spain went all the way to clinch the crown in the second event.

In a keenly-contested summit clash on Friday, Fatma and Abrabela played like true champions to overcome a first set deficit before defeating Argentina’s Victoria Bosio and Japan’s Kana Daniel in match tie-break.

After losing the first set, Fatma and Arabela fought bravely in the second and then were in command in the match tie-break before clinching the match and the crown with a final scoreline of 2-6, 7-5 (10-5).

Like in the first tournament, top-seeded Fatma also took part in the singles competitio­n where her challenge ended in a 6-1, 6-2 semifinal loss to Swedish third seed Fanny Ostlund.

For the record, Fatma and Arabela settled for the doubles second place in the first tournament after losing the final 6-4, 6-3 to Carlota Molina Megias of Spain and Anastasia Yakimova of Belarus.
