Disappoint­ing day for Oman at Asian Indoor Games

MUSCAT: With tennis star Fatma Al Nabhani and sprinter Ahmed Mubarak Al Saadi failing to advance in their respective competitio­ns, Oman experience­d a disappoint­ing day in the ongoing Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenist­an on Monday.

Omani medal hope Fatma Al Nabhani failed to clear the first hurdle in the women’s singles tennis tournament.

The Omani ace, who was recovering from an injury prior to the Games, suffered a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets defeat at the hands of Thai girl Chompoothi­p Jundakate.

fighting to Fiji’s Ruby Coffin 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2) in a first round match on Sunday. Fatma will now team up with Sarah Al Balushi in the doubles competitio­n, which is scheduled to start on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Mubarak Al Saadi missed the 400m final berth after finishing third in the Semifinal 2 on Monday.

Ahmed Al Saadi clocked 49.50 seconds to finish behind Pakistan’s Mehbood Ali (47.73) and India’s Amoj Jacob (47.94). Earlier in the morning Round 1 heats, Al Saadi had a better time of 49.36 as he clinched the semifinal place with a second place finish in Heat 6.
