Remarkable decline in incoming cases: Public Prosecution

MUSCAT: The total number of cases registered by the Public Prosecution in 2017 registered a ‘remarkable decline’, according to the Public Prosecution said in a press conference that was held at the Public Prosecution Complex in the Airport Heights on Tueday.

The total number of cases decreased by 27.1 per cent from 37,972 in 2016 to 27,686 in 2017.

During the press conference, Dr. Ahmed bin Said Al Shukaily, Assistant Attorney General and Speaker of the Public Prosecution highlighted the major achievements made by the Public Prosecution during the past period and the future plans, as well as the new statistics on the cases investigated by Public Prosecution in 2017.

He said that governorate wise, the Governorate of Muscat has received the highest number of cases with 6,435 or 23.2 per cent of the total number of cases, followed by the Governorate of North Al Batinah with 3,674 cases or 13.3 per cent of the total number of cases.

He pointed out that the number of crimes decreased by 53.3 per cent in 2017 to 1856.

The number of misdemeanor decreased by 25.1 per cent to 25,449 (8,566 less compared to 2016).

The number of appealed cases decreased by 19 per cent of 1085 cases from 5,737 in 2016 to 4,652 in 2017.

He noted that this figure is not included in the total number of cases between 2016 and 2017.

He added that the number of accused registered at the cases decreased by 8.9 or 3,373 from 38,000 in 2016 to 34,629 in 2017.

“The juniors constituted 2 per cent of the total number of accused in 2017 or 848 ; a decline by 242 in 2016.
