MEC Literary and Debating Week mesmerises student community

MUSCAT: In its continuous effort to spread knowledge and encourage students to read, research and build their knowledge, Middle East College (MEC) recently organised the Literary and Debating Week at the Student Hub, in the MEC campus, Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM).

The event was held under the auspices of Her Highness Sayyida Basma Al Said. Eminent Omani writers and poets such as Maimona Al Wahibi, Qais Al Farsi and Talal Al Rawahi, Ali Al Mujaini, Ali Al Balushi, Mazen Al Haddabi, Hamza Al Busaidi and Mahmoud Al Yahyaie, the singer Murshid Al Baddaei attended the occasion with their performanc­e.

The event included a book fair and a corner to gather old and used books, which was initiated under the slogan ‘A book in every hand’.

Qais Al Farsi, an Omani writer who participat­ed in the event said, “Reading is not an ordinary activity, it is an opportunit­y for knowledge building and travelling in time and space.

“Today we are building a generation of educated people through reading books on various topics of interest. We are here to encourage students to read more. I would like to thank MEC for inviting me and for organising such a wonderful event.”

Taimaa Khalid Al Balushi, a student of the Archives and Records Management programme and a member of the Literary and Debating Society at MEC expressed her happiness at being one of the organisers and a participan­t in the event. She said that it meant a lot to her as a student who is passionate about the media industry. She expressed that participat­ing in such events adds a lot of value, enhances profession­al competency, helps develop skills and brings out the hidden talent of students.

The college has set up five societies and six academic clubs to help students develop their skill, abilities, knowledge and talent in various areas of interest.

The college is always keen to support its students in organising events on community outreach, photograph­y, culture, art, theatre, music, literary, debating, sports, health, safety and environmen­t, which are all part of MEC’s efforts to enhance student experience during their stay at MEC.
