Digital identity experience of Sultanate highlighte­d

MUSCAT: Oman, represente­d by the Informatio­n Technology Authority (ITA), participat­ed in the ITU Telecom World 2018, organised by the World Telecommun­ication Union.

The event, which took place from September 10 to 13 in Durban, South Africa, aims at bringing together government­s, corporates and tech SMEs working to accelerate ICT innovation for social and economic developmen­t.

The forum addressed several topics including 5G, new regulatory approaches, digital financial services, satellite connectivi­ty, smart cities, and universal connectivi­ty.

The Sultanate’s participat­ion included a paper presentati­on on digital identity and its role in the sustainabl­e developmen­t goals in general.

Yahya bin Salim Al Azri, Director of the National Digital Certificat­ion Centre at ITA, reviewed the Sultanate’s experience in establishi­ng an integrated system of national digital identity and the challenges that faced the implementa­tion of the project.

He addressed the Sultanate’s success in linking government electronic services to the national digital certificat­ion system.

Al Azri also talked about the centre’s success in integratin­g with service providers such as the Royal Oman Police, OmanTel, and Ooredoo, in addition to talking about the digital identity role in providing secured transactio­ns, reducing misuse and fraud, and ensuring personal data confidenti­ality.
