Tuna and sar­dine pro­cess­ing project to boost food se­cu­rity

MUS­CAT: The Found­ing Com­mit­tee for the Tuna and sar­dine will hold a meet­ing next Mon­day at Oman Food In­vest­ment Hold­ing Co (OFIC) with po­ten­tial in­vestors in this vi­tal project.

The cost of the first stage of the project is OMR29 mil­lion and of the sec­ond stage is OMR41.5 mil­lion.

The tuna and sar­dine pro­cess­ing project is one of the lead­ing projects adopted by OFIC as part of its vi­sion and aims to en­hance food se­cu­rity in the Sul­tanate, in­crease self-suf­fi­ciency of cer­tain food prod­ucts and goods and cre­ate job op­por­tu­ni­ties for cit­i­zens.

The project is ex­pected to be set up in the area al­lo­cated for fish in­dus­tries at the Spe­cial Eco­nomic Zone in Duqm. The project in­cludes a fac­tory for sar­dine and tuna pro­cess­ing, in ad­di­tion to pro­duc­tion units for oils and fish­based fod­der.

The project will also in­clude cold stores, lab­o­ra­to­ries for qual­ity in­spec­tion, in ad­di­tion to re­search and in­no­va­tion fa­cil­i­ties. It also in­cludes a fac­tory for can. The com­pany is ex­pected to be in­cor­po­rated at the first quar­ter of next year as a closed joint stock com­pany.

Ac­cord­ing to plans, the project is ex­pected to pro­duce 72,000 tons of sar­dines and 17,000 tonnes of tuna per an­num.
