Tuna and sardine processing project to boost food security
MUSCAT: The Founding Committee for the Tuna and sardine will hold a meeting next Monday at Oman Food Investment Holding Co (OFIC) with potential investors in this vital project.
The cost of the first stage of the project is OMR29 million and of the second stage is OMR41.5 million.
The tuna and sardine processing project is one of the leading projects adopted by OFIC as part of its vision and aims to enhance food security in the Sultanate, increase self-sufficiency of certain food products and goods and create job opportunities for citizens.
The project is expected to be set up in the area allocated for fish industries at the Special Economic Zone in Duqm. The project includes a factory for sardine and tuna processing, in addition to production units for oils and fishbased fodder.
The project will also include cold stores, laboratories for quality inspection, in addition to research and innovation facilities. It also includes a factory for can. The company is expected to be incorporated at the first quarter of next year as a closed joint stock company.
According to plans, the project is expected to produce 72,000 tons of sardines and 17,000 tonnes of tuna per annum.
