MUSCAT: Oman’s minister of health honoured several medical and security personnel for their assistance during the Mekunu and Luban Cyclones, which hit Dhofar Governorate last year.

Dr Ahmed Al Saidi, Minister of Health, hosted the celebration in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr Khalid Al Meshaikhi, Director General of the General Directorate of Health Services in Dhofar, and a number of officials across public, private, security and military institutions.

The guests were honoured for their contributions to the emergency plan.

Al Meshaikhi thanked all the civil, military, and private sectors for their cooperation and fruitful coordination in dealing with the Mekunu and Luban cyclones.

During the preparations for the cyclone, the Directorate General of Health Services Dhofar evacuated the Sultan Qaboos Hospital, where 333 people were transported to the various northern governorates of the Sultanate. In addition, 56 people were transferred to the Armed Forces Hospital in Salalah on May 2018, 48 hours before the direct effects began.

The health services also worked with specialists at the Armed Forces Hospital to accept and accommodate all births and emergencies.

The hospital was supplied with the necessary equipment and beds in dealing with the expected increase in the number of patients and potential visitors during the exceptional weather.

In the rest of the wilayat, especially those expected to be directly exposed to the effects of Mekunu and Luban, a number of precautionary measures were taken, including the evacuation of the Sadh and Rakhyot hospitals, in addition to the Dhalkout and Halaniyat health centres.
