Ex­pat In­di­ans can vote in polls

MUS­CAT: Non-res­i­dent In­di­ans (NRIs) who live in Oman and other parts of the world, can now regis­ter to vote in elec­tions tak­ing place in In­dia.

NRIs who are in­ter­ested in cast­ing their vote can regis­ter as NRI vot­ers on the home page of the In­dian Elec­tion Com­mis­sion’s web­site, where they will be redi­rected to a form, where they can en­ter all their de­tails.

Form 6A that is avail­able in three lan­guages – English, Hindi and Malay­alam – re­quires vot­ers to fill in sev­eral de­tails, in­clud­ing the state and dis­trict they are from, names of their rel­a­tives, birth de­tails, as well as their place of res­i­dence in In­dia, as men­tioned on their pass­port.

Pass­port de­tails are also manda­tory while fill­ing this form, as well as de­tails re­gard­ing the NRI’s coun­try of res­i­dence. Vot­ers also have to ex­plain why they are away from In­dia at the time of vot­ing, and need to share ID proof in the form of a pho­to­graph and pass­port copy.

NRIs who regis­ter on the web­site are also re­quired to sign a dec­la­ra­tion, which states that they are In­dian cit­i­zens who re­side over­seas.
