88th edition of GCC Sports meetings begin in Muscat

MUSCAT: The 88th edition of the meetings of the Executive Office of the Council of Presidents of GCC National Olympic Committees hosted by the Sultanate began in Muscat yesterday which will continue until April 9. Several issues related to GCC sports will be discussed during the meeting.

The joint meeting No. 15 of the executive office with the chairmen and representa­tives of GCC Games Organising Committees will also be held during the same period.

Discussion­s with also be held with the Secretary General of the Jordanian National Olympic Committee, the Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and representa­tives of the Asian Games and Asian Beach Games.

“All preparatio­ns for the meetings were completed well ahead of time for the meetings of the presidents of GCC National Olympic Committees and the joint meeting of the executive office and chairmen and representa­tives of the organizing Committees of GCC Games”, said Taha Al Kishry, OOC Secretary General.

Al Kishry pointed out that the committee had prepared itself well ahead of scheduled meetings in Muscat with a number of working teams being formed to follow up various preparatio­ns and provide all possible means for the success of this GCC event. The OOC Secretary General stated that agenda of the meetings would include several topics, the foremost of which are the followup of decisions of the Supreme Council in its last session held in Riyadh in 2015, with regard to the vision of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia (KSA) regarding volunteeri­sm, procedures for proclamati­on of the GCC Dispute Resolution Authority supposed to have started its work in Manama, decisions taken on school sport and joint GCC working strategy.

Dr. Adil Khalifa Al Zayani, Chairman of Human and Environmen­tal Affairs at the GCC General Secretaria­t said: “In fact, we are happy to be in our second home, the Sultanate of Oman, and pray to Almighty Allah to grant His Majesty the Sultan robust health and preserve him as he is the founder of the GCC Council and the father of all and patron of the renaissanc­e, youth and developmen­t in Oman and GCC.

“The meetings will deal with future programmes and projects directed at the GCC youth in order to further promote sport, culture and social relations among all segments of the GCC societies.

We are optimistic that the meetings will be a success and come out with decisions that would serve the youth including men and women of all ages and their participat­ion in the Olympic Games.”
