MUSCAT: Parents of students attending Indian School Wadi Kabir will now need to pay an additional OMR2 per month, after the school decided to increase its monthly fee.

The news comes just days after parents gathered at the school to demand a rollback to the new fee structure, which will mean they must pay an extra OMR24 every year for each child who attends.

In addition, a single annual payment of OMR10 will be levied towards curricular and cultural activities the school will be organising in future. The school management maintained that the fee increase was intended to provide better benefits to teaching staff.

A statement issued by the ISWK school management committee (SMC) said, “With robust forward planning and further enhancements in mind, the School Management Committee has approved the increase of the tuition fee for the Academic Year 20192020 by OMR2 per month, which amounts to OMR24 per annum, per child.”

“There are several planned academic and extra-curricular activities which will support the all-round development of all students at ISWK,” added the SMC. “In order to avoid inconvenience for parents in providing costumes, materials and transport required, and to avoid teaching staff having to spend class time collecting these, the school management has decided that a lumpsum of OMR10 per annum will be collected along with term fee.”

The SMC clarified that the increased fee for the upcoming academic term would be OMR34, and asked parents and guardians not to follow misleading statements on social media. Families who could not afford their children’s education under the updated fee structures were reassured that the concession system in place up till now would continue.

“Parents who have fulfilled the eligibility criteria and have been receiving this fee discount will have this extended for the new academic year as well,” added the school. “The school will accept new applications for the same up until 10th May. A list of eligible candidates will be displayed by 30th May 2019. As in the past, we look forward to the continued support and prompt cooperation of our parents, which will ensure the upkeep of education standards and assist in the smooth functioning of Indian School Wadi Kabir.”

Earlier, parents whose students were enrolled at ISWK had gathered en masse outside the school after they submitted a written request for the reversal of this decision to the school authorities.
