ISC Oman celebrates Independence Day
MUSCAT: Indian Social Club (ISC) Oman celebrated India’s 72nd anniversary of independence with pomp and splendour at the Oman auditorium at the Ritz Carlton-Al Bustan hotel.
A cultural programme was organised commemorating the day. The celebrations began with the recitation of the national anthems of Oman and India, to showcase the deep sense of friendship and solidarity that exists between the Indian Diaspora in Oman and the citizens of Oman.
Dr Sathish Nambiar chairman of the Indian Social Club welcomed the gathering and greeted the audience on the occasion. Indian ambassador to Oman Munu Mahawar was the chief guest for the event and conveyed his greetings on the Independence day to all gathered. Sheikh Kanaksi Khimji was the Guest of Honour.
According to Suhail Khan, Entertainment Secretary at ISC, “The theme for the celebration this year was folk dances of India. The ISC and its linguistic wings showcased a kaleidoscope of folk dances from all parts of India. 16 different folk dances were performed depicting the cultural diversity of India.”
Babu Rajendran general secretary of ISC presented the vote of thanks.
Over 200 performers regaled the houseful crowd which had gathered to celebrate the spirit of patriotism. The evening started with a fusion dance showcasing folk and classical dances like Kalari from Kerala, Lavani from Maharashtra, gara from Gujarat, Manipuri from Manipur, Bharatnatyam from Tamil Nadu and bhangra from Punjab. The various linguistic wings then presented folk dances from their respective regions, performers in colourful attires and jewellery danced in merry telling tales of weddings, festivals and other joyful occasions in their day to day lives. Sushmita Gupta was the Emcee for the evening and held the crowd entertained all thru the evening with her anecdotes and narrations.
