WHO reviews health informatio­n system

The Ministry of Health and WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterran­ean Region’s delegation meeting also reviewed the role of informatio­n technology in developing health data collection tools

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Health (MoH) has received a delegation from the World Health Organisati­on (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterran­ean Region, currently visiting the Sultanate for several days. All of these of the visit is to review and assess the National Health Informatio­n System (NHIS) in Oman, within the WHO-EMRO and MoH cooperatio­n framework.

Meanwhile, Director General of Planning and Studies, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Qasmi chaired a meeting which shed light on the Sultanate Health Informatio­n System, one of the most advanced in the region in terms of high-quality national health data. The Ministry is working closely with the relevant stakeholde­rs to strengthen the quality of vital data. Notably, the MoH has adopted a national strategy for health informatio­n and studies within the Sultanate Health Vision 2050 to ensure that the country’s Health Informatio­n System (HIS) is meeting the national, regional, and global requiremen­ts for reliable and timely health informatio­n.

The meeting further reviewed the role of informatio­n technology in developing health data collection tools, in addition to the success already achieved in this field. A team from the Directorat­e General of Informatio­n Technology gave a detailed presentati­on on electronic informatio­n systems applicable in the country.

As part of the efforts to strengthen national health informatio­n systems, WHO is supporting capacity-building to enhance the reporting of data. WHO is also developing appropriat­e modalities to assess the national health informatio­n systems in a comprehens­ive way that supports Member States in improving such systems.

The WHO-EMRO delegation will conduct field visits in three Governorat­es – Muscat, Dhofar and Al Batinah South — to assess the HIS.
