OETC takes part in IEEE Oman Electricity Forum
Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) participated in the second edition of the Oman Electricity and Power Conference IEEE.
The conference, which commenced yesterday at the Grand Millennium Hotel, gathered international and local participation from key stakeholders in the electricity and energy sector. Under the esteemed patronage of Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy & Minerals.
The three-day forum will feature the latest developments within the electricity and energy sector. It provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements made by the Sultanate of Oman in its energy transition journey, in line with the objectives set forth by Oman Vision 2040. Additionally, the event facilitates knowledge exchange, highlighting cutting-edge technologies, and fostering cooperation among participants, including industry experts, officials, and specialists from Oman and abroad. The conference’s focal themes include market and policy updates, sustainable energy, distribution systems, power grids, energy management/efficiency, and asset management and optimisation.
The company’s participation in the forum included presenting several working papers and managing some dialogue sessions.
Ahmed Al-Nadabi, the General Manager of Regulatory Affairs and
Compliance, presented a working paper ‘Access Charges Regulation in Oman’ that addressed the restructuring of calculating the cost of electrical energy transmission.
The paper discussed the restructuring of the electricity sector, the current cost of electricity transmission, and the proposed plan for the new cost of electricity transmission that serves the aspirations of various network users, ranging from investors to electricity consumers, and enables the achievement of Vision 2040 in terms of diversifying sustainable energy sources, green hydrogen, and contributing to carbon neutrality. In addition, several related topics were discussed.
Eng. Yaqoub Hamed Al Shamli, Network Operation Application Support Section Head Load Dispatch Center, presented an insightful paper entitled “Review on Future of Monitoring and Control of Power Grids using Synchro Phasors Technology.” The paper explored the wide-ranging benefits of Synchro Phasors technology in achieving grid-wide observability, monitoring, and event analysis in control centres worldwide. Eng. Al Shamli outlined the increasing complexity of electrical power systems and the expanding applications of Synchro Phasors, delving into situational awareness, widearea monitoring, real-time operations, and power system planning. Furthermore, the paper summarised the experiences of various utilities in implementing Synchro Phasors applications.
In another engaging presentation, Eng. Anwar Nasser Al Harthi, Network Studies and Performance Section Head, delivered a paper titled “The Ancillary Services Requirements in Oman Power Sector.” The paper highlighted the importance of developing Ancillary Services techniques considering the current developments in the network. The paper also emphasised the Ancillary Services requirements’ role in achieving the renewable energy integration plan while maintaining the secure operation of the power system.
Furthermore, Dr Rashid AlBadwawi, Corporate Affairs General Manager, expertly moderated a session titled “Asset Management & Optimisation.” The session encompassed in-depth discussions surrounding five key papers, including topics such as asset performance tool utilisation through data analytics for Transco’s power Transmission Network, statistical analysis of electrical faults in a 33kV distribution network (an oil field case), digitally optimised and innovative solutions for synchronisation in the transmission network, high impedance fault detection in the distribution network research, and a case study on the benefits and ROI of GIS implementation.
Regarding the company’s participation in the conference, Dr Rashid Al-Badwawi emphasised that the conference is an important platform for exchanging experiences and knowledge in the sector. He stated that our participation is in support of this annual event, which is endorsed by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and brings together the concerned parties to develop this vital sector. Al-Badwawi added, “We always strive to attend such forums that support our vision, which is to achieve global recognition with a smart transport network by 2030. This allows us to stay informed about the latest technologies and modern systems that we can adapt to serve the national network.”
