Power demand in Duqm surges 27%

The increase in electricity demand reflects a steady growth and the rapid pace of investment at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm

-

The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZD) posted a 27 percent rise in the volume of demand for electricity services in 2022.

By then, the number of subscribers stood at 6,953. Between 2020 and 2022 electricity service connections registered a growth of nearly 100 percent.

This development reflects the steady growth and the rapid pace of investment at the SEZD, as well as the tremendous efforts made by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones and the companies operating in the sector.

The authority has developed a mechanism for electrical connection to beneficiaries so that it could be more flexible. The company in charge of the service would remain committed to delivering the service without additional costs. The electric power capacity will be raised from 2500 kilowatts to 6,000 kilowatts.

A top official from the Special Economic Zone of Duqm administration stressed that the current projects in the electricity sector in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm aim to keep pace with the steady growth in electricity to meet the current and future needs

of society through cooperation with partners in the private sector with the suppliers in this field, such as the Rural Areas Electricity Company, the Oman Electricity Transmission Company and the ‘Marafiq’ company.

He said that there are a number of major projects that are currently being implemented, including connecting the current network in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm to the national main network with a voltage of 400 kilovolts, to meet the needs of various economic projects and stimulate the investment environment of

the region. It is hoped that the linking project will be operational during the year. This will provide mutual coverage in case of emergency, benefit from the surplus and reduce the cost of producing electric power.

He pointed out that the projects approved by the General Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones completed in the past two years had a major role in providing service to beneficiaries in many locations, including the area of light, medium and heavy industries, fisheries and the sea fishing port.
