Al Maawali lauds role of Arab Parliament on regional issues

MUSCAT: Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, on Sunday received Adel Abdulrahma­n Al Asoomi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, who is currently on an official visit to the Sultanate of Oman.

During the meeting, Al Maawali stressed the importance of roles undertaken by the Arab Parliament in consolidat­ing parliament­ary diplomacy and supporting joint Arab action.

He commended the Parliament’s support for Arab issues at regional and internatio­nal parliament­ary events.

He also stressed Oman’s keenness to participat­e in the activities of the Arab Parliament. In this context, he said that the existing cooperatio­n between the Council of Oman and the Arab Parliament stems from a desire to activate joint Arab action and the role of parliament­ary diplomacy.

For his part, Al Asoomi expressed appreciati­on for Oman’s balanced stands on Arab issues and its support for peaceful coexistenc­e and its permanent stance in backing the Palestinia­n cause at regional and internatio­nal meetings.

Al Asoomi valued Oman’s active participat­ion in the activities of the Arab Parliament. He underlined the high level of Shura Council’s participat­ion in improving the performanc­e of the Arab Parliament.

Al Asoomi pointed out that Oman achieves the goals of parliament­ary diplomacy through the active participat­ion of the Council of Oman in different events of the Arab Parliament. In particular, he underlined the prominent contributi­ons of the Shura Council in upgrading the performanc­e of the Arab Parliament.

Al Asoomi noted that the Shura practice in Oman stems from the country’s wise political policy that reflects positively locally and abroad. He affirmed that Shura practice in Oman proved to be a success, notably through progressio­n in exercising powers.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to develop cooperatio­n between the Shura Council and the Arab Parliament in a way that serves the common interests and contribute­s to rapprochem­ent in addressing issues on the agenda of regional and internatio­nal parliament­ary unions.

Al Asoomi and his delegation toured the sections of the Council of Oman. They took note of the modern techniques used in running the council’s sessions, including the use of advanced digital apps to vote electronic­ally on topics debated at the council.

They also took note of the architectu­ral model of the Shura Council’s structure, which is inspired by the Omani heritage. They also visited the library of the Council of Oman and were briefed about the library’s role in promoting legislativ­e action and expanding general knowledge through its reference books, encyclopae­dias and electronic content that also benefit researcher­s.

The meeting was attended from the Omani side by Said Hamad Al Saadi and Tahir Mabkhout Al Junaibi—the two deputies to the Shura Council Chairman, in addition to Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, and Sariya Khalfan Al Hadi, Member of the State Council, and other members the Shura Council.

The meeting was also attended by Khadija Hajoobi, deputy head of the Arab’s Parliament’s Committee for Social, Educationa­l and Cultural Affairs and Women’s and Youth Affairs, in addition to members of the Arab Parliament: Shadya Khudhair Al Jamal and Ali Zaid Ahmed Shadli.
