SSDO to Punjab Govt: Conduct local body elections without first 100 day
"Restoration of the local government system is not just a legal requirement but a fundamental pillar of democratic governance.
Ending the long-standing democratic crisis in the country and the formation of a new government is indeed a positive development. However, establishing a strong democratic system remains paramount for ensuring persistent and sustainable progress. The restoration of the local government system is not just a legal requirement for the survival of democracy, but a fundamental pillar of democratic governance. Syed Kausar Abbas, Executive Director of Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) said that the provincial government should prefer to transfer the development funds to the local elected representatives instead of the members of provincial and national assembly. The Government of Punjab should develop immediate strategy to conduct the local government election within first 100 days to empower the local people for their development.
Syed Kausar Abbas said the country's historical evidence bears witness that this important step is necessary to promote democratic governance, empower local communities and promote sustainable development across the country. The history of the local government system in Pakistan proves that the establishment of local governments has been very important in ensuring effective governance and participation of citizens in political systems. From the basic democratic system established in 1959 to subsequent periods, local governments have played an important role in providing essential services and meeting basic needs at the local level.
He further said that the global best practices proves that countries having strong local government systems often reap the benefits of better service delivery, reduced citizens' core problems, increased local business activity, and political awareness among the public. By transferring power to the grassroots level, Pakistan can harness the potential of its communities. SSDO stresses that the restoration of the local government system is not just a matter of administrative reform but a strategic necessity for sustainable development.
The SSDO calls upon the present government to interact with relevant stakeholders, including civil society organizations and local leaders, to develop a comprehensive plan for the restoration of the local government system. This shared vision will ensure that the system is designed to meet the growing needs of Pakistani citizens and contribute to long-term sustainable development.
