Jang Group's publisher Mir Javedur Rehman passes away
Jang Group’s publisher Mir Javedur Rehman passed away in Karachi on Tuesday. He was suffering from lung cancer and was being treated at a private hospital in Karachi.
Javed was the brother of the group’s chief executive Mir Shakilur Rehman, who is currently under NAB’s custody in Lahore. Rehman had asked for permission to travel to Karachi in order to meet his brother, which was issued by the account ability bureau on Monday, however he could not meet his brother before he passed away.
Meanwhile, an accountability court in Lahore granted a 7 day transit remand of Mir Shakil to enable him to attend the funeral rites of his brother. Accountability Judge Syed Jawadul Hassan passed the orders while allowing an applica tion filed by Mir Shakil for the purpose. A prosecutor for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) stated that the bureau did not have any objection if Mir Shakil was allowed to attend the funeral. The court allowed the application and directed Mir Shakil to ensure his presence before the court on April 7, on the expiry of his physical remand term. Mir Shakilur Rahman was arrested by the bureau on March 12 in plots illegal ex emption case. The bureau alleged that the accused obtained illegal exemption on 54 plots of onekanal each in Johar Town Lahore, with the connivance of Nawaz Sharif, the then chief minister of Punjab, in violation of the exemption policy. ‘HUMBLE, SIMPLE, HARDWORKING MAN’: Mean while, colleagues and friends of Mir Javedur Rehman de scribed him as a “humble and simple man” and a hardworking journalist. President Arif Alvi termed Mir Javed as “very soft spoken and nice man” in a condolence message on Twitter.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif said Mir Javed’s “services to country’s journalism will be remembered for a long time to come”.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, in a statement, of fered his condolences to the family of the deceased. He lauded Mir Javed’s services for the Jang Group, especially its magazine Akhbar e Jahan. Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervez Elahi described Mir Javed as a “humble and sympathetic” man. PML N lawmaker Khawaja Saad Rafique regretted that Mir Shakil could not meet his brother as he was under NAB’s detention. Council of Pakistan News paper Editors (CPNE) President Arif Nizami and Secretary General Dr Jabbar Khattak also condoled his death and prayed for his forgiveness. The CPNE leaders said that he was a towering figure in the world of journalism and the en tire newspaper industry has been saddened by his death.
