Too early to talk about international Test comeback, says Mohammad Amir
Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir has refused to rule out an international Test comeback but remained hesitant while speaking about it, saying that he is focusing on “enjoying the red-ball cricket.”
Amir last featured for the Pakistan Test side back in 2019 and has not represented his country in any format since retiring from international cricket at 28.
The left-arm bowler recently joined Gloucestershire after his compatriot Naseem Shah was ruled out due to an injury. His debut went unnoticed as he remained wicketless as the match ended in a high-scoring draw.
Amir stepped up his game in the following match against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl as he claimed wickets of James Vince, Nick Gubbins and Aneurin Donald. The pacer ended up picking 3/57 in 26 overs in the first innings, followed by 3/33 in the second innings.
“I am playing after three years, so it isn’t easy as a fast bowler,” he told the ECB Reporters Network in Southampton.
“I didn’t play any first-class cricket in the last four years, but I am getting better after the first game and just trying to help the boys and do well for them,” he added. “As a bowler, it is my duty to bowl well and lead from the front, so that is what I’m trying to do.”
Mohammad Amir has featured in various leagues across the globe following his retirement. He has kept himself match fit even if it meant playing a small Ramadan tournament.
“It is too early to talk about a Test return. You never know and things can be changed but for now I’m enjoying playing for Gloucestershire,” he said on whether he would consider reversing that decision and returning to Test cricket.
“After recovering from the side strain in the PSL, I was training and feeling so good and thought why not give a chance to red-ball cricket,” he explained. “I think I am getting better and on the right path now. I am enjoying red-ball cricket. For now, I’m only here for three games and afterwards I’m planning on going to the Caribbean Premier League.”
