Ahmed Zawad Chowdhury, a highschool student from Chittagong, has won a gold medal for Bangladesh in the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Held in July in the city of Cluj-Napoca in Romania, pre-college students from over 100 countries participated in the Olympiad. Held every year, the IMO is a six-problem mathematical competition for high school students. Winning 3 bronze and a gold medal, Bangladesh attained 42nd position among the 111 participating countries this year. Until now, Bangladesh has appeared 13 times at the Olympiad, winning one gold medal, 6 silver and 19 bronze medals. It has won honourable mentions on numerous occasions.
