Ahmed Zawad Chowd­hury, a high­school stu­dent from Chit­tagong, has won a gold medal for Bangladesh in the 59th In­ter­na­tional Math­e­mat­i­cal Olympiad (IMO). Held in July in the city of Cluj-Napoca in Ro­ma­nia, pre-col­lege stu­dents from over 100 coun­tries par­tic­i­pated in the Olympiad. Held every year, the IMO is a six-prob­lem math­e­mat­i­cal com­pe­ti­tion for high school stu­dents. Win­ning 3 bronze and a gold medal, Bangladesh at­tained 42nd po­si­tion among the 111 par­tic­i­pat­ing coun­tries this year. Un­til now, Bangladesh has ap­peared 13 times at the Olympiad, win­ning one gold medal, 6 sil­ver and 19 bronze medals. It has won hon­ourable men­tions on nu­mer­ous oc­ca­sions.
