Smallest of the Scandinavian countries, Denmark as an EU member occupies a significant position for Pakistan. The country is resource rich in form of both having tremendous manpower and advanced technology both which can be prove to be an excellent point to connect with Pakistan. Pakistan and Denmark enjoy deep rooted diplomatic and political relations which are based on mutual trust and shared objectives of peace and harmony in the world. Pakistan has been supported by Denmark in various fields. There is a strong Pakistani Diaspora living in Denmark, who are acting as ambassadors of good will for both countries. In the year 2011, Denmark provided Pakistan development support in various fields including education, health and economy. The Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) launched its Pakistan Program in June 2011, and since its inception in Pakistan initiated various projects addressing the various sectors in Pakistan. During the floods last year, Denmark, a country of 5.4 million people, was among the first donors to show their immediate support to Pakistan, donating a total ofUSD22 million dollars as relief contribution. TheDiplomaticInsight arranged an exclusive sitting with H.E. Mr. Uffe Wolffhechel, Ambassador of Demark to Pakistan to know more about the relationship between Pakistan and Denmark in various areas and issues of bilateral nature. H.E Uffe Wolffhechel is a carrier diplomat and has a background of law and economics. He has represented Denmark in countries like Venezuela and Bosnia Herzegovina. He has also spent a few months, during his career, as a freelance journalist and acquired training for journalism as well. With such a rich background H.E Mr. UffeWolffhechel is in now in Pakistan to represent Denmark. We are producing the excerpts of the interview of him with The Diplomatic Insight. Q: How you term the relationship between Pakistan and Denmark?
Pakistan and Denmark are enjoying deep rooted political and diplomatic relations. There are more than 20,000 Pakistanis living in Denmark at the moment and they are working hard to earn good will for both countries. Many of them have integrated very well in the Danish society. Some of them are doctors, engineers, students or investing in local markets. We have especially seen the girls do extremely well even much better than the average Dane. Hence they are playing a role that has brought the countries closer to each other. There are also many Danes in Pakistan, who are working for various International NGOs and are bringing their expertise to Pakistan to share and explore the possibilities of cooperation and collaboration. Most of relationships are based on economic support and development field. Denmark is also part of “Friends of Democratic Pakistan” group to support Pakistan in its way towards prosperity and development. Q:Whatarethevariousinitiativesthathavebeentakenoverthe years to improve the bilateral relations between the two countries? There are various initiatives that have been taken over the years to enhance the relationship between the countries. The Government of Denmark has announced an increase of Danish development assistance to Pakistan from USD 8 million (DKK 40 million) to USD 28 million (DKK 140 million) for the next 2 years. The aim is to contribute to development and stability in Pakistan. The Government of Denmark has also supported Pakistan through humanitarian aid. Denmark gave USD 22
