South Korea likely to sign air service deal with Georgia

SEOUL: South Korea is likely to sign an air service agreement with Georgia this year, an official has said, a move that would open a new route to the South Caucasus country.

Last year, the two countries initialed the deal and have since embarked on domestic procedures, which could be done in the coming months. South Korea and Georgia "are expected to sign the agreement" this year said the official handling the issue. She did not provide a specific time frame.

Once the deal is signed, aviation authoritie­s of the two countries are set to ink a separate memorandum of understand­ing on air service that would handle traffic rights and codeshare programs, another official said.

Direct flights between South Korea and Georgia could add to the traveling convenienc­e of South Koreans.

Korean Air Lines Co., South Korea's national flag carrier, said it is not time to set up plans as traffic rights have yet to be addressed. Asiana Airlines Inc. said it will consider whether to launch a new service to Georgia once the air service agreement is signed. Chinese health authoritie­s announced Monday that 2,744 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by the novel coronaviru­s (2019-nCoV), including 461 in critical conditions, had been reported in the country by the end of Sunday.

Sunday saw that 769 new confirmed cases, 3,806 new suspected cases and 24 deaths (24 in Hubei) from the disease were reported, showed figures from the National Health Commission. By the end of Sunday, the pneumonia situation had resulted in a total of 80 deaths, a total of 51 people had recovered and there were currently 5,794 suspected cases.

A total of 32,799 close contacts have been traced, the commission said, adding that among them, 583 were discharged from medical observatio­n on Sunday, with 30,453 others remaining under medical observatio­n.

The figures also showed that 17 confirmed cases had been reported in Hong Kong and Macao special administra­tive regions and Taiwan, with eight in Hong Kong, five in Macao and four in Taiwan. Overseas, confirmed cases were reported in Thailand (7), Japan (3), the Republic of Korea (3), the United States (3), Vietnam (2), Singapore (4), Malaysia (3), Nepal (1), France (3) and Australia (4).

China has announced the extension of the Spring Festival holiday for three days to Sunday, Feb. 2, amid its efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronaviru­s.

Universiti­es, primary and secondary schools, and kindergart­ens across the country shall postpone the start of the semester, said a State Council General Office circular, adding that the specific time for the semester start will be unveiled by respective education authoritie­s. The measure is taken to help reduce mass gatherings, curb the spread of the novel coronaviru­s, and to better safeguard the safety and health of the Chinese people, according to the circular.
