Thirty years ago, Papua New Guinea’s national rugby league team, the Kumuls, recorded a historic 37– 6 win over France in a Test match at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby. It was the first time that a PNG national team had been victorious over a European national team in a Test match in any sport. PNG was captained by John Wagambie (pictured holding the ball with the 22-man squad). He also led the side in the Pacific Cup tournament in New Zealand the same year, where the Kumuls lost 17–25. Wagambie captained the Kumuls from 1977 to 1984 and was coach in 1992. From East Sepik, he played for Paga Panthers in the regular Port Moresby competition. After his rugby league career, he became secretary of the Department of Commerce and then went into business for himself.
