Thirty years ago, Pa­pua New Guinea’s na­tional rugby league team, the Ku­muls, recorded a his­toric 37– 6 win over France in a Test match at Lloyd Rob­son Oval in Port Moresby. It was the first time that a PNG na­tional team had been vic­to­ri­ous over a Euro­pean na­tional team in a Test match in any sport. PNG was cap­tained by John Wagam­bie (pic­tured hold­ing the ball with the 22-man squad). He also led the side in the Pa­cific Cup tournament in New Zealand the same year, where the Ku­muls lost 17–25. Wagam­bie cap­tained the Ku­muls from 1977 to 1984 and was coach in 1992. From East Sepik, he played for Paga Panthers in the reg­u­lar Port Moresby com­pe­ti­tion. Af­ter his rugby league ca­reer, he be­came sec­re­tary of the Depart­ment of Com­merce and then went into busi­ness for him­self.
