There was al­most no traf­fic in Port Moresby 60 years ago, but there were petrol pumps right on the road. The ves­sel at an­chor at the main wharf is the Soo­chow. It be­longed to the New Guinea Aus­tralia Line of the China Nav­i­ga­tion Com­pany. The Soo­chow, along with her sis­ter ships Shan­shi and Sinkiang, plied the Syd­ney– Brisbane– Port Moresby–Sa­ma­rai route on a 28-day turn­around pas­sen­ger and freight ser­vice.
