Representing Queen Elizabeth II at Papua New Guinea’s independence, Charles, the Prince of Wales, undertook a tour of the country after the independence ceremony and associated activities in Port Moresby. His tour included a visit to highlands provinces, including the Eastern Highlands where he landed in Goroka before being driven in a flag-bedecked open truck to Kundiawa in Chimbu. At Kundiawa he was met by local MP the late Iambakey Okuk. Among places he visited was Chuave High School, where students had designed a welcome sign in Tok Pisin, English and Welsh.
