- BY AUBREGYN ANCHETA

PASSION FOR FARMING. When asked why we are passionate about agriculture, it’s often difficult to explain. We, farmer’s experiences on the farm might be too long to describe our passion. Passion in farming is very valuable because it is one’s opportunity to discover what agriculture was really about firsthand. Meet our two passionate cabbage farmers from Negros Occidental whose dreams are to continuously support the food industry through farming.

Their passion for vegetable farming and their hard work have tasted success at last after a long while. Farmers Vicente Jabalde and Ignaci Saragina are both from different cities, they have been involved in the cultivation of vegetables especially cabbage, their favorite crop to grow. Cabbage farming has proved to be a success to them since its one of the most suitable crops to grow in their area.

These two farmers are very passionate about farming, when asked as to what inspired them to choose cabbage farming, Jabalde said that he was fascinated with the cabbage plantations in Canlaon, and gave it a thought to grow cabbage, too. A lot of factors have affected their planting management for cabbage, the weather has become very unpredictable; the season has completely changed. Despite all this, he still always gave it a try to plant over and over again.

This time, he tried using the new variety of Known You Seed Philippines Inc, the Wave variety. Marketing representative of KYP, Ms. Sisa Dujale introduced it to them and convinced him to plant the same crop but of a different variety. Wave matures in his area from 55-60 days after transplanting, during the first harvest, his hard work paid off as each cabbage weighed a marketable size of 1 kg to maximum of 2.5 kg. The variety Wave is very compact, easy to maintain as it grows very well and observed to have some tolerance against black rot.

Following the success, we met Mr. Ignacio Saragina who is also a cabbage farmer in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, he also planted the same variety as introduced by Ms, Dujale.

Saragina said cabbage farmers like him had faced a lot of problems in marketing of the vegetable during the pandemic. A lot of farmers have been reeling from low vegetable prices ever since, the situation got worsened also by lockdowns imposed amid the pandemic. But being a farmer, he doesn’t want to give up. For years of planting, giving up is never an option.

All farmers like him are armed with dedication to their work, every chance to plant is a ray of light. Saragina planted Wave variety and took the plants for 60 days to maximum of 70 days to mature, the variety as per his description is marketable, but he hopes that they can achieve a good price and the weight and the color of the leaves are what most consumers are looking for.

Wave cabbage produces head with an average weight of 1.0 kg to maximum of 2.5 kg, it gives reliable harvests of sweet, 5 to 7-inch green heads on compact plants.
