Lettuce is fast-growing, low-maintenance, and thrives in various environments. It flourishes as a cool-season crop in most regions but can also be cultivated in areas with full sun and well-drained soil. Due to its shallow roots, it's advisable to check the soil twice a week and water whenever the top inch is dry.
Lettuce is ideal for beginners; given its rapid growth, it's best to plant small batches of seeds at a time, either in batches or by staggering the plantings.
A. ICEBERG – Also known as Crisphead, Reine de Glace, and Igloo lettuce. Available varieties: Sylvia from Known You Seed Philippines Inc. Iceberg lettuce is renowned for its crispness, water content, and refreshing taste. It forms large, tightly packed heads, resembling basketballs, with pale-green leaves.
B. LOOSE LEAF – Also known as Batavia lettuce, leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, or red leaf lettuce. Available varieties: Grand Rapid and Dazzling for green leaf; Red Rapid and Roxie for red leaf lettuce from Known You Seed Philippines Inc. Red leaf lettuce is particularly rich in the antioxidant beta carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. It boasts a mild flavor and flexible texture despite its crunchy stem. Its uneven, ruffled surfaces add layers of texture to salads.
C. ROMAINE – Also known as Cos lettuce. Available varieties: Grand Romaine and Tango from Known You Seed Philippines Inc. This large, leafy lettuce is stiffer than most, with a thick center rib providing a satisfying crunch. The rib also imparts a slight bitter taste.
