Dengvaxia experts posibleng may conflict of interest

Kailangan ng mga sinasabing health experts na isiwalat kung may koneksyon sila sa mga korporasyon o personalidad na sangkot sa kontrobersiya tungkol sa Dengvaxia vaccine upang malaman kung mayroon silang conflict of interest, giit ni Surigao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Johnny Pimentel.

“The mere perception of a possible conflict of interest in this case may be enough to taint or cast doubt on the opinion of a specialist, regardless of his or her credentials,” ayon kay Pimentel, na chairman ng House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability.

Kamakilan ay nabunyag na ang dating Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral, na nagsalita ang sumulat tungkol sa isyu ng Dengvaxia, ay kasama sa board of trustees ng Zuellig Family Foundation.

Sinabi ni Pimentel na dalawang multinational pharmaceutical companies ang sangkot sa isyu ng Dengvaxia: Sanofi S.A., ang gumagagawa ng Dengvaxia, at ang local distributor ng Dengvaxia, Zuellig Pharma Holdings Pte. Ltd.

Sinusuri ng Pimentel committee ang pagbili ng Aquino administration ng tatlong milyong doses ng Dengvaxia na nagkakahalaga ng P3.5 bilyon nong Enero 2016.

Sinabi ni Pimentel na ang medical profession at ang pharmaceutical industry “are to some degree connected.”

Karaniwang inaalok ng pharmaceutical companies ang mga doktor ng overseas scholarship, pagbiyahe para sa international conferences and consultancies, sabi ni Pimentel.

“This is how moneyed pharmaceutical firms grow their influence - by cultivating gainful relationships with physicians and regulators who also happen to be doctors,” aniya.

Dagdag ni Pimentel: “In this case, it is quite possible a number of experts offering their opinion on the controversy may owe either Sanofi or Zuellig, or both, a debt of gratitude, which should be voluntarily disclosed in the interest of impartiality.”

Ang Pilipinas ang unang bansa sa mundo na gumamit ng Dengvaxia bilang bakuna laban sa dengue noong Abril 2016.

Noong nakaraang Nobyembre, isiniwalat ng Sanofi ang resulta ng long-term follow-up study na nagsasaad na ang mga batang hindi pa nagkakaroon ng dengue ng binakunahan ng Dengvaxia ay maaaring magkaroon ng severe case dengue.

Dahil dito, itinigil ng Department of Health ( DOH) ang pagbabakuna ng Dengvaxia, ngunit mahigit na 830,000 bata na ang nabakunahan.
