Seguridad sa bigas, dapat tiyakin ng DA, NIA

Bunsod ng umiiral na kakulangan ng bigas sa Zamboanga City, hinimok ni House Appropriations Committee chairman Rep. Karlo Nograles ang Department of Agriculture (DA) na makipagtulungan sa National Irrigation Administration (NIA) para mapabuti ang coverage ng National Irrigation System (NIS) at mapasigla ang ani ng palay upang matiyak ang sapat na supply ng bigas sa bansa.

May mga report na umabot na sa P72 ang bawat kilo ng bigas sa Zamboanga City dahil sa rice shortage, na nagbunsod din upang isailalim sa state of calamity ang siyudad.

“In a country where each individual consumes an average of 111.6 kilograms of rice per year, making sure that we have rice security, or a stable supply of affordable rice, should be a top priority,” ayon kay Nograles.

“We’ve long held pride over us being an agricultural country, meaning we’re fed primarily thanks to our hardworking farmers in the provinces—but they need more support. We have to take concrete steps to improve the productivity of rice farmers so that first, they earn more from rice farming; and second, they can sell rice at competitive rates,” dagdag ng kongresista.

Ito ang inihayag ni Nograles kasunod ng pag-amin ni Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol sa pagdinig ng komite kamakailan tungkol sa kakapusan sa bigas.

Aminado si Piñol na sa ngayon, hindi kaya ng Pilipinas na makipagkumpetensiya sa big exporters sa rehiyon, tulad ng Vietnam at Thailand dahil bukod sa hindi kakayanin ng bansa na makapag-produce ng surplus rice, “our rice is more expensive.”
