IM Garcia grabs solo lead in National Chess Championship
INTERNATIONAL Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia subdued FideMasterMari Joseph Turqueza to grab the solo lead after the seventh round of the 2018 National Chess Championship Grand Finals being held at the Activity Hall of Alphaland Makati Place in Makati City late Wednesday.
With the win, Garcia boosted his total to 5.5 points, a full point ahead of Turqueza, IM Haridas Pascua, IM Paulo Bersamina and Grandmaster John Paul Gomez.
Garcia split the point with Gomez in the sixth round during the Wednesday morning session.
Gomez, meanwhile, beat National Master Rolando Andador in the seventh round.
B e r s a m i n a d e f e a te d Jonathan Maca Jota in the sixth round before settling for a draw with IM Chito Garma in the seventh round.
Pascua, the defending ch a m p i o n , outclassed Turqueza in the sixth round then split the point with GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. in the seventh round.
Antonio bowed to IM Richelieu Salcedo III in the sixth round. Salcedo, a member of the Philippine Air Force chess team, crushed Jeth Romy Morado in the seventh round.
Salcedo and Antonio are currently tied at sixth to seventh spots with 4.0 points each. Morado is in eighth place with 3.5 points.
