Fire razes Navy's ammo depot

Bandera (Mindanao) - - NEWS - Roson

FIRE razed the Philippine Navy's depository of ammunitions in Sangley Point, Cavite, early Friday.

The fire, according to reports started at one of the bunkers of the Naval Ordnance Depot around 5:30 a.m., Navy spokesman Cmdr. Jonathan Zata said.

That bunker contained ammunition for "small-caliber firearms," as well as M203 riflefired grenades and smoke grenades, Zata said.

Members of the Navy, Air Force, and Bureau of Fire Protection contained the blaze around 7:45 a.m. and declared fire out 7:53 a.m.

No one was reported injured.

Around 300 military families staying inside the camp, located some two kilometers away from site, were evacuated for the meantime as part of the standard operating procedure. They were also likely to return within the day, the official added.

Up to 10 ships and small boats were also transferred outside the naval base because of the incident.

Investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the fire, he said.—John
