LAWYER ON PEACE MISSION SHOT DEAD

SHARIFF AGUAK, MAGUINDANAO — A lawyer was shot and killed by a fellow passenger in a van bound for Cotabato City on Wednesday, police said.

Reports said lawyer Nasser Laban, 48, a peace advocate and who had been conducting forums about the Bangsamoro Organic Law, was with at least 10 passengers when the van left Tacurong City for Cotabato.

Senior Supt. Madzgani Mukaram, Maguindanao police director, said when the van reached a section of the national highway in Barangay Meta here, one of the passengers asked the driver to pull over so he could alight.

The man, however, shot Laban and escaped on a motorcycle driven by another man.

Laban was hit in the head. He was brought to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Kaliman Sangkad, 35, the van driver, was wounded after he was hit by stray bullets.

He was also taken to the hospital and is still being treated because of the bullet wound to the right side of the chest.

He was initially brought to the Integrated Provincial Health Office bin Shariff Aguak, but had to be transferred to a hospital in South Cotabato because of a power interruption.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m., along the National Highway in Brgy. Meta, particularly in front of the barangay hall and fire station.

Police in Datu Unsay are still tryong to determine the identity, whereabouts, and motive of the assailant, who quickly fled after the incident.
