A squad of troopers, including Cablas, was heading to their detachment when they were ambushed by about 20 rebels in Brgy. Cabatangan, around 5:30 a.m., according to the report.

The rebels also opened fire on the detachment, and a 20minute firefight ensued, the report said.

Hours later, around 8:25 a.m., members of the 94th Infantry Battalion were also ambushed in So Kaningag, Brgy. Linantuyan, of Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

The soldiers were riding a military truck to the barangay proper to attend a "condemnation rally," when they encountered an undetermined number of rebels, said Capt. Eduardo Precioso, Army 3rd Infantry Division public affairs officer.

This triggered a firefight that lasted for about 30 minutes, before the rebels withdrew, he said.

No casualties were reported among the troops, and soldiers were sent to pursue the attackers, Precioso said.
