A SOLDIER was killed when government forces clashed with Abu Sayyaf members in Patikul, Sulu, Friday afternoon, the military said Saturday.

Killed was Cpl. Herald Marayag, a member of the Army's 21st Infantry Battalion, said Lt. Col. Gerry Besana, Armed Forces western Mindanao Command spokesman.

Members of the 21st IB were conducting operations in Brgy. Bungkaong around 5:30 p.m., when they encountered about 30 Abu Sayyaf members under subcommander Almujer Yadah, Besana said.

Firefight lasted for 30 minutes, with troops from other units providing fire support and reinforcement, he said.

The bandits withdrew, leaving an M14 rifle, three magazines, and a bandolier.

Marayag was initially wounded and brought to the hospital in Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista, Jolo, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Troops ferried his remains to Zamboanga City, Saturday morning.

Lt. Gen. Arnel Dela Vega, Wesmincom chief, extended condolences to Marayag's family.

"We shall continue his legacy and work hard for the defeat of the Abu Sayyaf and the realization of lasting peace," Dela Vega said.
