Garma stays on top in Asian Seniors chessfest

TAGAYTAY City — International Master Chito Garma split the point with IM Petronio Roca to stay on the top spot after the seventh round of the 9th Asian Seniors Chess Championship (Standard event) at the Tagaytay International Convention Center late Friday.
The Tondo, Manila native Garma remained in the lead with 6.0 points on five wins and two draws in this prestigious nine-round tournament.
Defending champion and tournament top seed Grandmaster Eugene Torre, meanwhile, defeated Fide Master Adrian Ros Pacis to raise his score to 5.0 points and keep alive his hope of winning the title in the 34-player, 10-nation competition.
Also with 5.0 points are National Master Cesar Caturla and FM Oleg Rinas of Kazakshtan.
Caturla halved the point with IM Angelo Young while Rinas subdued NM Rolzon Roullo.
NM Stewart Manaog toppled NM Carlo Lorena to catch up on Young at the sixth to seventh spots with 4.5 points apiece. — Marlon Bernardino
