Cinemalaya offers filmmaking classes

THE Cinemalaya Foundation will be opening the Cinemalaya Institute, which will provide education, training and accreditat­ion of practition­ers in key aspects of film production, in June.

The institute will be housed in the New Media, School of Arts & Design of the College of St. Benilde, the Cinemalaya Foundation’s partner for this project.

This is a three semester intensive training program that will offer training in writing, directing, production, cinematogr­aphy, editing, sound, production design, music score and acting. The courses will be offered in clusters, with the first cluster comprised of courses in direction, screenwrit­ing and production starting this June.

Introducti­on to Producing, on June 1-26, is a four week course that teaches students the fundamenta­l skills and procedures used in managing the making of a film. It will be taught by John Paul Su, an MFA degree holder from the NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia in Singapore and an award-winning director who has produced news and feature programmin­g for major media outlets around the world. Students who want to take this course must have a knowledge of Movie Magic Scheduling as they shall be required to prepare a production book during the course duration. The fee is P25,000.

Fundamenta­ls of Screenwrit­ing, on June 8 to July 4, is a four week screenwrit­ing workshop in the language of dramatic storytelli­ng and visual storytelli­ng. Sophia Wellington, a faculty member of the of the NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia in Singapore, will handle the course. At the end of the course, students are expected to complete a shooting draft for a seven to 12 minute film. Course fee is P25,000.

Basic Filmmaking: The Silent Film, to be held from June 22 to Aug. 1, is a six week course in directing. Award winning director and NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia Professor Carlitos Siguion Reyna will teach this course. Each student will direct a seven-minute short silent film. The course requires that students bring in the shooting drafts of their scripts on the first day of class. Course fee is P35,000.

culturalce­nter.gov.ph. Deadline for submission of applicatio­n form is on May 15. Interviews will be held on May 18 and May 19. Acceptance to the program will be announced on May 20.
