Let there be (yellow) light
LIGHTS form part of a vehicle’s safety features, their specifications, construction and functions governed by internationally recognized standards — most of which are flouted by local drivers. Like any safety item, lights are pricey, with costs going up the more technologically advanced — and therefore, safer — they get. Generally speaking, the more upscale a vehicle is, the better lighting system it will likely have ( think gas-filled HID and LED lamps).
These advanced lamps can be fitted to vehicles equipped with lower- spec lighting systems. Now, provided that the retrofitting is done properly — lights’ illumination levels conform to local codes, their electrical specs match those of the vehicle, among others — the installation will surely improve driver visibility (and, therefore, safety).
Recently, US- based brand PIAA started offering a new line of lighting products that are specifically designed for use during inclement weather. Intended either for additional lighting units that have special separate mountings or as replacements for vehicles’ stock auxiliary lamps are the company’s Plasma Ion Yellow bulbs. These bulbs, which come in various sizes, are coated with ion crystal, transforming white light into amber light without affecting illumination. PIAA said that the ion crystal coating allows as much as 95% of the light beam to pass through it, rather than the mere 65% that makes it past conventional dyed glass. This makes Plasma Ion Yellow perfect for use in rain and fog as a yellow beam provides better contrast against the elements than a white beam does, which tends to dissipate under such conditions.
Complementing Plasma Ion Yellow are PIAA’s Ion LED light bars. Designed chiefly as auxiliary lighting for SUVs or other outdoorsy vehicles, the Ion LED draws less power from the vehicle’s electrical system while providing competition- level illumination, according to PIAA. It noted that these lights are perfectly legal for street use, too, and offer the same inclementweather driving advantage as the Plasma Ion Yellow bulbs because of their yellow light beam.
PIAA said its yellow LED bulbs ( also available in Xenon White color) also offer the advantage of having a sharp cutline, directing the light beam to the road. This prevents dazzling oncoming drivers. The company added that its various LED bulb models are designed to last throughout a vehicle’s life-span.
Besides yellow lights, PIAA products include upgraded and auxiliary lighting systems for cars, SUVs, ATVs and even motorcycles, counting those intended for use in motor sports. Meaning these are as much visibility aids as they are visual statements.
