Sasha Banks: Girl Power

- By Michael Angelo S. Murillo Reporter

THROUGHOUT the years there is no denying the contribution that women superstars have in the continued popularity and success of the World Wrestling Entertainment ( WWE). And while the men most of the time take center stage, the ladies of the WWE have taken some of the limelight as well and they are very proud of it knowing what they do is more just them seeing action in the ring.

One lady performer that takes pride in what she does in the WWE is Sasha Banks. Apart from steadily establishing a solid career in sports entertainment, she also takes satisfaction in believing that through what she is doing people can see that they have a place in the WWE and women in general can do a lot.

Banks will be in the country next month to take part in the WWE Live Manila event. She will take on women’s champion Charlotte in what many see as an entertaining and exciting matchup between two of the WWE’s popular lady superstars.

“The message that I want to convey by doing what I do, especially for little girls, is never give up on your dreams. Always fight for what you believe in,” said Banks in an interview conducted by the WWE whose transcript was shared to BusinessWorld.

“Stand up for yourself even if your voice is shaking. When I was growing up I had to learn how to stand up for myself. I worked hard and was resilient and now I’m a WWE superstar,” she added.

The 24-year-old California native also paid tribute to legendary wrestling performer Eddie Guerrero, who she looked up to while she was growing up and one of her inspirations now that she is in the WWE.

“He showed the world that he was the best even if the world thought he was small. He wanted to achieve more and be the best,” said Banks of Guerrero, who died more than a decade ago.

She added, “Eddie loved what he was doing and I would like to emulate that. He showed that you may be small but you can also be the big dog on the block.”

Zeroing on her clash with Charlotte at WWE Live Manila, happening on Sept. 9 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Banks said fans should expect an exciting show.

“You can expect the best show in the world from me. I’m excited to go the Philippines and showcase what I can do. And it’s not only me, but also the other WWE superstars,” she said.

Banks said that Charlotte is a tough opponent but she is confident that she can handle the reigning champion.

“I’m nervous every time I step in the ring but I’m confident of my abilities and I’m willing to take anybody who they put in front of me,” she said.

Others on tap for WWE Live Manila, albeit the lineup is still subject to change, organizers said, are Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins, John Cena vs. Big Show, Finn Balor vs. Chris Jericho, Cesaro vs. Sheamus, New Day vs. Gallows and Anderson ( WWE Tag Team Championship), Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens, Golden Truth vs. The Shining Stars and Neville vs. Bo Dallas with Curtis Axel.

Tickets, ranging from P1,580 to P15,840, are now available at www.smtickets.com or SM Tickets outlets.
